September 2011: Newsletter
Hi to you all.
Well a new season starts with the “Natter and Noggin” on the 10th September with “Opening Day” on the 17th September at Bowls Papanui in Condell Avenue.
On the Programme page you will find the “Draft” programme for the 2011/2012 season. On the reverse side are the key Championship and Interclub dates for the club.
The entry for Club Championships close on the 24th September so now is the time to arrange your teams. With the playing days for the various competitions listed together all team members know the commitment so any days that players are unavailable should be arranged early or other arrangements made rather than at the last minute.
As stated at the Annual Meeting each Saturday can start at the Shirley Bowling Club for those members who do not have cars and the normal donation to the car driver as in previous years when travelling away to interclub matches would apply. For the first couple of weeks any member wishing to use this option or are prepared to use their car from the club should contact me to ensure that we have sufficient cars available. Natter & Noggin day leaving at 3pm. Opening day leaving at 12.30pm.
Bowls Papanui have gone out of their way to make us welcome. Our club programme has not changed too much from previous years but our “home” green is Bowls Papanui.
Thursday’s Triples Teams need to be entered with Keith Hopgood if you have not already done so.
The club will have its own locker room at Papanui with a limited number of lockers available. Notice Boards will be put up for member’s information.
Earthquake News: For those members houses affected by the “Quake” hopefully the resolutions are starting to take place whether repairs or relocation.
At the Bowling Club things are moving very slowly. Just last week Structural Engineers looked again at the Building and NZ Turf Institute has surveyed the green and priced out repairs which came to $64,000. Unfortunately as said before things are moving very slowly in this direction.Contact details:

March 2011 - Earthquake Update
While I know many of you will for the first time or yet again have been affected by the recent series of earthquakes and subsequent after-shocks.
The ‘Executive’ and ‘fellow member’s’ thoughts are with those of you who have been personally affected, or who may have family and friends who unfortunately have injures or lost their lives.
For those of you who have had to move from your homes it will be difficult times, as experienced by those so affected by the September quake. For those people who have had to move new contact details would be appreciated so that we can keep in contact. See contact details at the end of this newsletter.
Update of the damage to the Bowling Club. The damage to the bowling club is as follows.
The bowling green suffered from liquefaction with a crack through the middle, the ditches and the watering system also damaged.
The building has also sustained considerable damage in the main, visually around the entrance to upstairs and the new part of the building where it as separated new from old. The block wall at the entrance is severally cracked with structural damage.
Other parts of the grounds have also suffered with the rolling surfaces.
We have had structural engineers look at the property along with our insurance assessors. The building is not able to be used currently. We are currently working through the issues but as many of you will know this is not a speedy process.
We do have insurance that will cover some of the damage costs. More about that at a latter date.

Where to from here!!! Firstly, members should come and collect their bowling gear from the locker room. By preference you need to use the access to the locker room via the door that leads from outside into the room. The keypad at the door entrance has the same combination as the other door and gate locks. Members of the committee will be available on site to assist those people who are uncomfortable entering the building at the following times, Tuesday and Thursday 3pm to 4pm. Other times by arrangement with Alan Dunlop.
The “Committee” is looking at options for the future of the club. With seven greens along with buildings of our immediate neighbouring clubs affected some serious thought needs to be given by us all as to the future. Discussions will be held with Bowls Canterbury and the Council in this regard. Some getting together by clubs may/could occur, if only on financial grounds and nothing else.
The “Committee” will be calling a meeting/s of the club when it is in a better position to explain all the various options available to us all.
The club will contacting various clubs in the city to ascertain as to whether we would be able to use a green or part there of, for next year, as a re-laid green would not be available until November at the earliest.
Any change of address or phone numbers would be appreciated. Your views on the future of the club and your personal situation with regards to ongoing bowls involvement would also be appreciated. Please contact the committee or Alan Dunlop who is co-ordinating this information.
AGM the meeting will be held on Saturday 18th June at 10.30am. Venue to be advised.
Club Championships. The various completions are continuing.
Winners to date are:
These games have been played thanks to the generosity of the following clubs. Bowls Papanui, Bowls Canterbury Green and the Christchurch.
Champion of Champions Games: Congratulations to both Jayleen Beale and Vic Jones for making excellent progress in the early stages of their respective junior games.
In Conclusion many will have a story to tell on how we/you were affected by the quake. Remember that as a club we are there to support each other so do not hesitate to ring up fellow members for help as many will know someone that maybe able to help or the committee could co-ordinate on your behalf.
Unfortunately the cities core services of power, water, sewer, telephone and roads were badly damaged on the east side of town, some areas worse than others and will/may take a long time to understand the exact extent of this damage.
The city and the province along with the rest of New Zealand and overseas countries have stood strongly beside us with help coming from far and wide and as a club we must do likewise. While easy to say, we must approach the future with positively.
On the lighter side:
Potato Patch: The potatoes are ready to be dug. Anyone wanting potatoes just go and help yourself. You will have to dig them!!!!!
Social Thursday: The normal Thursday drink and chat session is now being held at the St.Albans/ Shirley Club in 269 Hills Road 4.30pm until whatever.
